Staying Fueled at Work
Work really sucks sometimes. That’s the nature of the beast, right? You spend most of your hours each week on the job, so there are bound to be rough stretches. But one way to make it worse is by ignoring your hunger.
Dealing With Cravings During the Day
If your body is telling you to eat, you should listen to it. You need fuel throughout the day to stay focused and in a good mood. If you delay eating, you could become the dreaded hungry and angry combo: hangry.
How to Fuel Your Day at Work
According to the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines, moderately active males between the ages of 19 and 60 need 2,400 to 2,800 calories per day. Moderately active females between the ages of 19 and 60 need between 1,800 to 2,200 calories per day. (Take a look at Table A2-2 in Appendix 2 to see your specific caloric needs.)
In addition to calories, males over the age of 19 need 56 grams of protein and 130 grams of carbs per day, while females over the age of 19 need 46 grams of protein and 130 grams of carbs per day.
Nobody wants a hangry coworker. You don’t want to be irritable all day when you’re trying to get the job done. The solution is easy: Eat throughout the day. Here are a few ways to do it:
Snacking
The key to staying fueled on the job is to come prepared with snacks. Need some ideas for some easy snacks to bring to work? Here are a few ideas for you.

Enjoy a Nutrient-Dense Lunch
Diets should contain vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium and more.
Make sure you pack a lunch that contains healthy vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and protein sources.
USDA Dietary guidelines say that adults ages 31 through 59 should eat the following each day:
- Vegetables: 4 cups (males), 3 cups (females)
- Fruits: 2.5 cups (males), 2 cups (females)
- Grains: 7-10 ounces (males), 5-7 ounces (females)
- Dairy: 3 ounces (males and females)
- Protein: 6-7 ounces (males), 5-6 ounces (females)
Coffee Breaks
Kudos if you’re one of those people who doesn’t indulge in any caffeine…you’re a beast! But for those who like to have some caffeine to get a quick boost on the job, be careful how you drink it.
According to the American Heart Association, the key to healthier coffee breaks is to avoid adding sweeteners and cream and choose drip coffee instead of sugary beverages from a chain or shop.
Hydrate
The Mayo Clinic says that dehydration can negatively affect memory and increase anxiety and fatigue. This could pave the way for poorer performance on the job and increased snacking, which means more calories than your body needs.
It’s best to drink enough water throughout the day, even if it means setting phone reminders. Each person is unique, but generally, males need 124 ounces while females need 92 ounces of water per day.
For convenience, bring a big water bottle to your office or worksite, and fill it up over the course of the day. That way you can keep hydrated and avoid consuming empty calories through sugary drinks.
